Ouch
The Pirates entered Friday's day game at Wrigley Field as a team who had lost all 6 games against the Cubs they have played this year. The Cubs were 17-7 at home this year before today's game, and they succeeded in improving that mark to 18-7 as they beat the Pirates 7-4. The Cubs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning off home runs by Alfonso Soriano (his first of 2) and Geovanny Soto. Soriano tacked on his 2nd home run in the 2nd inning, helping the Cubs jump out to a 6-0 lead. Tom Gorzelanny settled down after those first two innings and pitched 4 scoreless, but it was too late. Osoria gave up another run in his two innings of work. The Pirates put up 4 runs late in the game, but didn't have enough in them to make a comeback. Jason Bay hit his 2nd home run in as many days, and Doug Mientkiewicz hit his first of the year. It was good to see Gorzelanny pitch a couple of good innings against this Cubs team who has absolutely obliterated us this year, but it didn't feel to good since he had already given up those 6 runs. Hey, atleast the Pirates didn't give up like they have in past year. It's good to see some fight in them, they know they have to get every win possible and it really seems like they are out there every day giving 100% trying to win the game. Tomorrow doesn't look too hot for the Pirates either, as we face one of baseball's best pitchers, Carlos Zambrano. I do believe this will be the first time this year that we have faced a really really good pitcher, so we'll need a real good start from Zach Duke, who has shown that he CAN do it, so I'm not totally counting the Pirates out tomorrow. Let's just hope the Pirates can take one of the next two from the Cubs and then focus on Milwaukee, who has a nearly identical record to ours. C'mon Duke!
